Mr. Thomas Dean is Phoenix High School Band Director

Mr. Thomas Dean is the new band director at Phoenix High School. Mr. Dean’s experience is vast. Mayme Gardner’s School of Music: Introductory piano, basic music theory. Brinson International Music Studio (BIMSI): Percussion instructor, basic music theory/diatonic harmony. John Curtis Christian School: Assistant Band Director, Percussion Director, Band Director Greater New Orleans Drum and Bugle Corps (GNODCA): Performing member, instructional staff Gulf Coast Sound Drum and Bugle Corps (GCS): Performing member, instructional staff, arranger/composer.

West Jeff High School: Volunteer rudimentary percussion instruction.

Belle Chase High School: Marching percussion technician.

Already this school year, Mr. Dean has made an impact on the students at Phoenix High School. Recently Phoenix has received instruments donated from the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation: 7 trumpets, 4 trombones, 4 baritones, 4 clarinets, 3 flutes, 3 alto sax, 3 tubas, 1 bass clarinet, 1 French horn,  4 octave marimba, glockenspiel, 2 concert snares, and 1 concert bass drum. The elementary music program also received a wonderful donation of method books, Boomwhackers, cd samplers, and Yamaha recorders. All that is left to get are the marching percussion, a few concert percussion items and the music. Mr. Dean says, “So far I’ve been able to spark interest in marching band as the first band rehearsal at Phoenix post Katrina was Tuesday, October 28, 2007 and look forward to seeing the level(s) of skills my students currently have.”

Besides just a marching band there will also be a concert band, percussion ensemble and elementary school band which will all hold performances at our own annual concerts: spring and Christmas. Unfortunately, Mr. Dean will not have the concert band ready in time to perform a Christmas concert though more emphasis is being set on the marching band with the first official performance being the Krewe of NOMTOC parade in Algiers the Saturday morning before Mardi Gras Day.  “I’m also VERY busy arranging an official school fight song that I’m composing myself,” said Mr. Dean.

Pre-K Make Mother Goose Come to Life

Ms. Roberson is one of the new teachers at Phoenix High School this school year. She teaches Pre-K. Ms. Roberson has worked very hard at engaging her young students with fun activities to reinforce the Comprehensive Curriculum. The students dressed up in costumes and recited the Mother Goose nursery rhymes like Little Bo Peep, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, and Hickory-Dickory-Dock. The students also performed for the Honor Roll Breakfast that was held on November 9, 2007.

7th and 8th graders read over 2 million words

The Accelerated Reader program is in full swing at Phoenix High School. The students read an accelerated reader book and then take a quiz on the book in order to earn points.

Ms. Segrave’s class is a perfect example of how this program works successfully. In the first quarter, her “rapid readers” of the 7th and 8th grades, combined to read a total of  80 books and over 2.1 million words. Already in this quarter, which began on October 18th, the “rapid readers” have read over 445,000 words and 23 books. Keep up the great work Ms. Segraves and the wonderful “rapid readers.” Your school is proud of you.

Boy's Basketball Team Goes to Arkansas

The day after Christmas, the Boy’s Varsity Basketball team boarded a bus and headed to Little Rock, Arkansas to play in the Heaven’s Best Basketball Tournament. The tournament lasted 4 days and the boys and their coaches returned home on the 29th of December. Coach Griffin, Coaches Jiles and Coach Etienne took Marcus Cross, Marlon Jiles, Allen Lewis, Brian Etienne, Shaquille Cosse, Theron Tinson, Clarence Harvey, Gary Sylvester, Donald Taylor, Wade Tarrence, Ellis Harvey and Justin Manuel to the tournament.

On the court, the boys showed off their hard work and talent winning two of the tournament days.  Marcus Cross was toted as a “College Prospect” at the tournament and the team played hard each of the four days. Coach Griffin organized the Christmas trip to the tournament and made all the arrangements for the team to play. Brian Etienne said, “Everybody had fun on the trip.” The team and coaches are very thankful to the School Board and private donations that made the trip possible.
